The Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) project has revamped the way Introductory Physics classes are taught at MIT. Physics is an experimental science, but many of the introductory level classes taught at MIT involve no hands-on laboratories. Modeled after the Studio Physics format instituted by Professor Jack Wilson at Rennsaeler Polytechnic Institute in 1994, the TEAL format combines lecture, recitation, and hands-on laboratory experiments into one classroom experience which, in this case, meant revamping the classroom itself. Animations and simulations have been incorporated into course materials to help students visualize and understand the complex interactions inherent in electromagnetism

These MIT panelists discuss their efforts to expand the educational horizons of learners from K to well beyond 12 with new technological tools and resources. Dick K.P. Yue describes the impact of MIT’s OpenCourseWare program, which is making all MIT’s courses freely available on the web. With 900 courses already published, the site receives an average of half a million visits a month, from every single continent on earth. Avid users include educators, self-learners and students from other universities boning up on a subject. Yue says that OCW is MIT’s way of taking a stand against a “movement that completely compartmentalizes information and access to knowledge.”

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will convene a forum in Sri Lanka from 26 to 28 June to bring together Deans of Education from four Asian countries to prepare plans to integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) into teacher education.
